Bite Sized Reviews: Quest Master!

I’ve always liked games with built-in level editors. Being able to craft my wicked maps has been a passion of mine for years. My first memory from that was creating maps in the Age of Empires. They usually involved a long, linear path filled with wild animals and testing how long a single unit lasted before being mauled to death.

I am realizing where my passion for making computer characters suffer came from. On that note, let us move on to today’s game, Quest Master! The concept of a Zelda dungeon creator has long been desired on PC. Super Dungeon Maker was the previous one I tried back in 2022, and while it had some good ideas, Quest Master does everything better. It launched last May in Early Access, packaging a ton of robust level editor tools into a lovely package even in an incomplete state. It is worth the 20 USD price tag, and developer Skydevilpalm has plenty of plans for the game in the coming months.

It already has thousands of community levels, with a hub world and several fun minigames to dig into while you make your levels. I like how Quest Master has tied its progression systems. While other titles might have level editing as a side project or something completely separate from the core gameplay, Quest Master requires it. With all its cute graphics and pleasant music, it feels like going off to Zelda Creation School. Over time, the hub village opens up with fun tasks for you to experience, including raising monsters from eggs, buying trinkets that can provide bonuses when playing dungeons, and several minigames that unlock as NPCs visit the town.

Once you’ve completed a miniature combat course with the Grandmaster, you’re ready to dive into creating your own levels or exploring the thousands of maps produced by the community. Quest Master is a game that thrives on community involvement, and this shared passion gives the game its unique charm and depth. The game provides enough polish and tools to perform this task quite well, fostering a sense of camaraderie among players.

Another aspect of Quest Master that I highly recommend is its core gameplay. The tight controls provide an excellent experience for both controllers and the keyboard, enhancing the gaming experience. The game’s production value is top-notch, with excellent music and sound effects that add depth and immersion to the gameplay. While the game draws inspiration from the Zelda series, it offers enough variation to keep it fresh and unique.

While this article covers my initial impressions of Quest Master, I’ve already found plenty to like about the game. The solid dungeon creation tools provide a robust foundation from which to work. Importantly, Quest Master avoids the usual pitfalls associated with Early Access, offering a stable and enjoyable gaming experience. If you’re a fan of the Zelda series and the idea of crafting your own dungeons, Quest Master is a game you can trust and enjoy!
