Movie Review: The Medium, 2021 - ★★★★★ (contains spoilers) Previous Seed of Life: Engaging with Growth Potential Next

Alright, this movie took a while to warm up to but I’m glad I watched it through. The first 40 minutes was long and not much happened other than first one, then two men traveling the countryside and avoiding zombies. Maybe we’re all sort of desensitized to that plight and it make that part of the movie hard to swallow.

I persevered because the tone of the movie was 100% serious. Pretty far from a Michael Bay movie, there was nothing exciting going on but the cast and crew were taking this part of the movie seriously and I found out later why. This isn’t a zombie horror film. This is a drama about the end of the world and how lonely it is…that just happens to have zombies, which aren’t even the main conflict of the movie, by the way, even if they do bring about the end of it.

The end is fucking sad but appropriately satisfying. During these two hours of no explosions or high adventure, I really got attached to the two main characters, and the fact that all good things must come to an end AFFECTED ME which means this was a great movie because that’s the point. I was invested.

I tried really hard not to ship those characters like a zombie apocalypse Brokeback Mountain. There was nothing homoerotic at ALL. I think that’s just where my brain goes when I imagine being emotionally dependent on one person and afraid that they might die at any moment and leave me alone. I digress. Great movie, just make it through to the end and don’t expect a thriller. Think Drama, not Horror.
